Marin County Transit District (Marin Transit)

Marin County Transit District (Marin Transit) was formed by a vote of the people of Marin County in 1964. Marin Transit is responsible for local public transit and contracts with other providesr, including Golden Gate Transit and Whistlestop Wheels, to operate local bus, the West Marin Stagecoach, three Community Shuttles and paratransit services. Marin Transit's services are designed to provide for the mobility needs of the general population throughout the County. In 2007, Marin County Transit District underwent a complete rebranding, renaming ourselves Marin Transit.

Through its contract with Marin Transit, Golden Gate Transit operates twenty-four local bus routes within Marin County. Twelve of these routes provide supplemental service to and from local schools in the morning and afternoon. Over 3.2 million passenger trips are provided annually on these local bus services.

Over 91,000 annual passenger trips are provided on local Whistlestop Wheels paratransit services using over 40 lift-equipped vans. Whistlestop Wheels also provides inter-county paratransit service on behalf of Golden Gate Transit. Over 12,000 passengers are transported annually on this regional service, operating between the counties of Marin, Sonoma, San Francisco and Contra Costa. Marin Transit administers this contract on behalf of Golden Gate Transit and is fully reimbursed for costs associated with it.

With the passage of the transportation sales tax, Measure A, on November 2, 2004, Marin Transit is charged with developing a Short Range Transit Plan (SRTP). This effort is based on a comprehensive needs assessment and includes extensive public input to develop strategies to develop an efficient and effective local transit system that is integrated with the regional system and can be delivered within the resources available. The SRTP is integrated with the development of a Strategic Plan for the Transportation Authority of Marin (TAM), which administers Measure A funds. For more information about Measure A, view the TAM website at www.tam.ca.gov
