A Place For Citizens to Participate in Local Government

The existence and role of appointive boards, committees and commissions provide opportunities for citizens to participate in and act on matters of public concern. Serving an advisory role, commissions depend upon Marin communities of interest to suggest policy on issues and to recommend program priorities to elected policymakers and local government management. The system of commissions is intended to be representative of and responsive to the communities served.

Appointive commissions exist within the County of Marin, Marin cities and towns, special districts and joint exercise of power authorities. Some are created by local elected officials; others serve roles mandated by state statute.

Each commission has an issue, policy and/or program focus representing its constituencies. Generally, commission appointees represent defined communities of interest.

Elected policymakers and government managers look to commissions to identify common ground on specific issues, indicate program priority preferences and provide input on existing and proposed public programs. The effectiveness of commissions is dependent on the commissioners' maintaining a strong relationship with the appointing elected officials and government managers of public service areas falling within the scope of the commission's charge.

All commissions are public bodies whose meetings are open to the public. The public is encouraged to attend and may comment on matters being considered.

There is an ongoing need for interested Marin residents to apply for positions on commissions which are of interest to them. Please participate.
