Alto Bowl
The Alto Bowl and Camino Alto Open Space Preserves occupy
the ridge of Mount Tamalpais that runs between Corte Madera and Mill Valley.
The easternmost part of the ridge is Horse Hill, appropriately named for the
horses that have pastured there for many years.

Bald Hill
This small preserve sits beside the Worn Springs Fire Road at the edge of lands
managed by the Marin Municipal Water District. It flanks the undeveloped,
privately owned summit of Bald Hill, a much beloved, highly visible local
landmark.

Baltimore Canyon
At the headwaters of Larkspur Creek, this preserve
encompasses a lovely canyon filled with history, stately trees, and a
spectacular waterfall. The trail system in this preserve connects to several of
the main fire roads that traverse the north slopes of Mount Tamalpais.

Blithedale Summit
This preserve is the largest link in a chain of preserves
that follow the “Northridge” of Mount Tamalpais as it sweeps down between the
communities of Mill Valley and Corte Madera.

Bolinas Lagoon
This protected estuary, just north of the town of Stinson Beach,
is a haven for birds, seals and other wildlife. The trails in
the Pine Gulch Delta pass through a shaded grove and lead to
the water’s edge.

Bothin Marsh
This
preserve incorporates a tidal wetland that is a small reminder of the vast salt
marshes that once surrounded San Francisco Bay. This quiet inlet at the north end
of Richardson Bay provides a home for several endangered species, including the
clapper rail and the salt-marsh harvest mouse.

Camino Alto

Cascade Canyon
This lush preserve, tucked into the hills above Fairfax, is
one of the true gems of the Open Space System. Cascade Canyon
incorporates some of the most pristine habitat in the Corte
Madera Creek watershed.

Deer Island
No longer a true island, this preserve rises above the
eastern edge of Novato from an area that was once part of the extensive
wetlands in the Petaluma River delta. Though just a few minutes from both
highway 101 and 37, it is a peaceful and quiet place.

French Ranch
This 370-acre preserve was added to the Open Space system in
2000. It incorporates the south-facing slope above the eastern end of the San Geronimo Valley.
Together with the Gary Giacomini and Roy’s Redwoods preserves, these lands
constitute a major portion of the Lagunitas Creek watershed.

Gary Giacomini
This huge parcel is a wild and rugged place. The windswept ridge
has a high-altitude feel, accentuated by the presence of a forest
of dwarf Sargent Cypress trees.
