2008 Marin County Open Space District
Terra Linda Community Invasive GoatGrass Removal Project

The District is underway with its 2008 Goatgrass Management Plan at Terra Linda/Sleepy Hollow Open Space Preserve.  The schedule for this year’s management activity:

Terra Linda/Sleepy Hollow Goatgrass Removal Project is entering its fifth season. This project is part of a county-wide effort to control the infestatioins of barbed goatgrass.

Barbed goatgrass (Aegilops triuncialis) is an invasive, non-native grass that is spreading throughout California's grasslands. The Terra Linda/Sleepy Hollow Divide Open Space Preserve has one of the only three, known populatioins in Marin, and it is the District's highest priority to eradicate and prevent the spread of this plant. In 2006 the District established study plots to compare management options and measure our success. Thus far, we have reduced the density of goatgrass by 50-85 per cent, and are still adapting our strategies as we continue to learn how weather, soils and slope play significant roles.

The following plan describes our 2008 strategy, timeline and volunteer opportunities.

January
- Begin monitoring sites for seedlings
- Plan herbicide treatment with contractors
- Update management plan and maps on website for coming season

January/February
- Mark treatment areas and replace missing stakes
- Treat largest goatgrass populations with herbicide
- Spot treat along Terra Linda Ridge Fire Road

February
- Create and distribute 2008 "Management Information" fliers

March
- Recruit volunteers for monitoring and hand removal
- Begin weed-whipping sites

April
- Continue weed-whipping sites every other week

May
- Begin density plot surveys with volunteers
- Hand-pull outlier populations with staff and volunteers
- Joint meeting and volunteer day on May 17th

June
- Conduct controlled burn on ridge top goatgrass population
- Collect seeds for propagation from different treatment areas

July
- Follow-up with mapping and data collection
- Compare and analyze density plot data to determine treatment success
