is the Civic Center Volunteers program?

Civic Center Volunteers was founded in 1979, and is an internationally recognized
innovative volunteer program. Last year we delivered more than 7.9 million dollars
in services to the residents of Marin. It's a great place to be a member of a team or
to work quietly alone because we are so large a program (4,000 volunteers annually)
there are vast opportunities no matter where you are in your life. CCV is a win/win
for you and us!
What's the difference
between Civic Center Volunteers and the Center for Volunteer and Nonprofit Leadership of Marin?

Civic Center Volunteers provides volunteers to local county government.
The Center for Volunteer and Nonprofit Leadership of Marin (479-5660) provides volunteers to non-profit agencies.
Who volunteers with
you? (top)
Career changers, students, retirees, re-entry, disabled, newcomers, immigrants,
traditional volunteers who want to give back to the community,
etc...No age limit at either end of the scale!
How much time does
it take? (top)
It requires two to thirty hours a week, depending on the job contract,
and the commitment lasts from three months to two years minimum, depending
on the job. There are also some shorter term projects available.
Do I receive training?

Everyone receives an orientation and "on the job training."
Many find it a good way to update their resumes and gain experience for their next step.
If I've never met a computer face to face, can you teach me how to use one?

Probably not. If you really want to learn a computer, it's best to take an
introductory course, for example through Regional Occupation Program or
College of Marin, and then come to Civic Center Volunteers to build your experience,
speed and confidence.

No. In fact, we often create a specific job to meet the needs and skills of a volunteer.

Do you have volunteer opportunities for evenings and weekends?

Yes, but not as many as we'd like. Some examples include working with at risk kids in
Juvenile Hall, open space group projects, Court Appointed Special Advocates, and the library.
If I volunteer,
will I get a paid job with the county? (top)
Who knows? Volunteering is certainly a great way to make contacts and prove your skills.
However, I would only encourage you to volunteer if you believe that volunteering for the
county would be something you'd enjoy as a complete experience in and of itself.
The county does a scrupulous job insuring a fair and equal opportunity for all
applicants who go through the identical screening and testing process for all jobs.
How
do I get to the Civic Center Volunteer Office? (top)
Coming southbound from Sonoma County: Take HWY 101 to North San Pedro
Road. Turn left at the stop sign (Merrydale). Make another left at the
first stoplight (N San Pedro Road) and go under the freeway. Turn left
at the next light (Civic Center Drive). Then, immediately take another
left onto the driveway that goes under the archway of the county building.
After parking, return to the building's archway/entrance and take the
elevator on your left up to the 4th floor, Room 403.
