Insurance Fraud Unit |
Specialist: Deputy District Attorney Tom McCallister
(415) 499-6450
The Marin County District Attorney's Insurance Fraud Unit prosecutes all forms of insurance fraud and related crimes, including Workers Compensation Fraud and Automobile Insurance Fraud. The Unit works closely with the California Department of Insurance as well as the fraud units of various insurance companies in investigating and prosecuting such crime.
Workers Compensation is a valuable program which when used to compensate a legitimately injured worker, benefits the people of the State of California. The rise in fraudulent claims creates an air of mistrust against those deserving of benefits while increasing employer costs and driving businesses and jobs from California. Similarly, Automobile Insurance Fraud has been a significant factor in increasing individual insurance rates. It is the unit's mission to investigate fraudulent claims and aggressively prosecute violators, thereby deterring others from similar conduct by demonstrating its consequences.
The consequences of a single violation of insurance fraud can be punished as a felony, resulting in a five year state prison sentence or a $50,000 fine or both.
